INSIDER – Mental Health: The Racing Life Part 2

Editor’s Note: This is part two of an in-depth look at the mental health challenges racers encounter while on the road with a touring series. The opening segment appeared in the April 3 issue of The Insider.

Each racer has a story. The challenges they face are often predictable given their station in life but remain firmly rooted in context. Success in this game pivots on a mixture of talent, opportunity and a dash of luck. However, one ingredient that may be underappreciated is the mental game. Those who survive and thrive demonstrate the ability to skillfully negotiate obstacles, avoid distraction and maintain confidence in themselves and their team. 

Spencer Bayston: Bayston and Gio Scelzi are at different points in their life journey than Cummins, Swanson and Grant. Nonetheless, they are in committed relationships and have their own set of responsibilities. Don’t be fooled, they also endure plenty of pressure and face nagging problems that demand attention.
