NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Fresh off his victory in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour opener a few days prior, Matt Hirschman raced to victory in the John Blewett III Memorial 76 for tour-type modifieds Wednesday at New Smyrna Speedway.
The triumph, which Hirschman said was his 200th career victory, came during night six of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.
Tom Martino Jr. jumped out to an early lead in the 76-lap race while the rest of the field hung back and conserved their tires. Martino’s big lead eventually came back to bite him as he would spin with five laps left in the race.
Hirschman, meanwhile, was methodical in his approach and ultimately took the lead and the race win ahead of Jimmy Blewett.
Craig Lutz was third, followed by Joey Coulter and Patrick Emerling.
In other action during the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing, defending super late model champion Derek Griffith claimed his first triumph of the week. He took the lead from opening night winner Brad May on lap five of the 35-lap feature and lead the rest of the way.
In the pro late model division, Conner Jones put an end to Michael Hinde’s dominant run to earn his first victory of the week in a photo finish. Jones edged Hinde by .067 seconds at the finish line.
Lastly, Wayne Parker was victorious in the Florida modified feature.
