Weltmeyer Wins, Hoffman Is Grundy Champion

MORRIS, Ill. – D.J. Weltmeyer came home the winner of the 30-lap late model stock car race at Grundy County Speedway Friday night.

Eddie Hoffman, meanwhile, wrapped up a record seventh late model track championship at the third-mile paved oval.

Weltmeyer’s second win of the season came in a .665-second margin over two-time track champion Ricky Baker. Fast qualifier Paul Shafer Jr., last year’s Grundy late model champion, finished third. Hoffman, Jim Weber and Keith Tolf completed the top five.

Despite two points races remaining, Hoffman secured the late model championship and broke a stalemate with his dad, Ed, for the most track titles at the Grundy speed plant.

Ed Hoffman won his first championship in 1971 when the speedway first opened with his last title coming in 1985.  Eddie Hoffman’s title run, on the other hand, started in 1997.

Vince Kuelbs scored his first career Mid American sportsman feature race, leading the 25-lap contest from start to finish. Ron Vandermeir Jr. finished second, followed by Kevin Murphy, Blake Brown, David Einhaus and fast-timer Marqus Hoover.

For the third time this season, Scotty Gardner won the street stock division 25-lap main event.

He topped Pat Ligue and Scott Gardner, who wrapped up the street stock title for his first Grundy championship.

Trevor Starek won his third pure stock feature of the season.
