MORRIS, Ill. — Eddie Hoffman and Nathan Kelly split 30-lap feature race wins with Hoffman claiming overall honors in the Frank Welch Memorial late model stock car special at Grundy County Speedway Friday night.
Hoffman, the seven-time late model champion at the third-mile paved oval and on top of the current points standings, rolled to victory in the opening 30 lapper of the evening, defeating last year’s late model titlist D.J. Weltmeyer, fast qualifier Scott Tomasik, Anthony Danta, Kelly and Larry Schuler in the 15-car field event. Hoffman, the speedway’s all-time feature winner, scored his 152nd career main event at the raceway.
Kelly, a second-generation racer whose dad, Pat, was a two-time Grundy late model champ, raced to his first feature win of the year. Kelly finished ahead of Danta, Hoffman, James Gregait, Scott Dunning and Tomasik. Weltmeyer and James Lynch crashed hard in the opening lap of the race, knocking out both drivers from the action.
Veteran racer Randy Weese won the 33-lap Candyman Special street stock main event. Sal Lozano, points leader Matt Chester, fast timer Cameron Preisler and Jonathan Stevens chased Weese to the finish line.
Zach Legner was the winner of the 20-lap pure stock (four-cylinder) main event. Legner bested Dan Schmeissing, Scott Ingram, Kristi Odom and Danielle Dobczyk. Jacob Senerchia was the winner of the 20-lap Midwest Super Cup Series headliner, taking the checkered flag in front of Rob Baaske and Chris Rossiter.
