Aukland Among Mojave Valley Victors

MOJAVE VALLEY, Ariz. – Mojave Valley Raceway closed its season with a New Year’s Eve race with four IMCA divisions on hand, headlined by the modified division.   

Adam Hommerding led the opening lap of the 25-lap feature before slowing in turn one, opening the door for Jake Pike to take over. Sixth starting Cody Laney used the bottom of turn four to gain the lead and established a gap between Pike and Matt Aukland, who raced each other for second.

With a handful of laps remaining Aukland used the bottom of turn two to nab second, which proved to be the winning pass.

Laney was in control until suddenly exiting the race track on the backstretch on the white flag lap. Aukland then led the final few corners to pocket the $1,000 top prize ahead of Josh Cain and Pike.

David Jones led the opening lap of the Northern sportmod feature before Mark Martini powered into the lead with a strong drive out of turn two. Martini controlled the race and took the victory ahead of Ryan Perry and Jones. 

Chris McCurdy Jr. started from the pole for in the stock car main and capitalized to claim the win. Trevor Hildago applied pressure early before fading to a distant second-place finish. Zach Griggs was third.

Ken McWilliams bested D.J. Werkmeister to win the sport compact feature that saw five cars in attendance.  

Mojave Valley Raceway opens the new year on Jan. 1 with modifieds chasing a $2,022 winner’s reward.
