Kay Secures Davenport Glory

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Justin Kay charged to his third IMCA Late Model triumph of the season Friday night at Davenport Speedway.

Nick Marolf jumped out to the early race lead. After starting in sixth, Matt Ryan passed Marolf for the lead on lap 14. Ryan held the lead until Justin Kay passed him on lap twenty-two.

As the field was coming to the white flag, Ryan was able to retake the lead, but a caution flag for debris washed out the pass. On the restart, Kay was able to get away and went on to take his third point feature win on the season at Davenport.

Ryan had to fight off Brian Harris to hold second. Andy Eckrich took fourth with Andy Nezworski rounding out the top five.

Mitch Morris may have had the easiest road to victory lane in the Eriksen Chevrolet IMCA Modified main. Morris took the lead of the 20-lapper on lap two. At one time, Mitch had a full straightaway lead on the rest of the field.

Late in the race, Travis Denning roared to the front, but had to settle for second, just a car-length behind the winner. Third went to a surging Spencer Diercks. Matt Werner and young Charlie Mohr finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Missouri’s Adam Birck hustled out to the early race lead in the IMCA SportMod feature. Logan Veloz grabbed the point after a lap nine restrart. Birck battled back and retook the lead on lap eleven. On the last lap of the race, Ryan Walker burst into the lead and took the win. Birck finished second with Veloz third. Brandon Jewell crossed the stripe in fourth, just ahead of Ben Chapman. Forty-one SportMods were on hand to compete Friday night.

It was a back-and-forth battle in the Koehler Electric Street Stock division. Donnie Louck held the early lead. Jesse Owen led lap nine, with Louck coming back on lap ten. Owen leading laps eleven and twelve. Louck thirteen and fourteen. On the final lap, Louck drove off the top of turn four, paving the way to Owen’s second win of the season. Brandon Setser finished second. Nick Hixson, Jeff Struck Jr., and Tony Von Dresky finished third through fifth, in that order.

For the first 10 laps of the QCjeeps.com Sport Compact feature, it was a three-way scrap between Cyle Hawkins, Aaron Hitt, and Josh Riley. The lead trio came together, allowing Codie Proehl to lead lap eleven. On the final lap, Hawkins regained the lead, taking his fifth win at Davenport this year. Riley recovered to finish second. Proehl finished third, ahead of Tim Sibley and Todd Sibley.

IMCA Mod Lites were racing at Davenport Speedway on Friday. Mike Zemo Jr. spanked the field, winning with a huge margin. However, Zemo failed to go to post-race tech and was disqualified. That handed the victory to Blake Gonzales. Jon Padilla finished second, with Michael Dominguez third.
