DUNDEE, N.Y. – Danny Johnson was scheduled to be racing at Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend with the Super DIRTcar Series, however engine woes sent Johnson back to New York.
It turned out to be a winning move as Johnson climbed aboard the Tyler Siri-owned big-block modified and drove to a victory Friday at Outlaw Speedway.
Dillon Groover led the opening nine laps from his front row starting position, but on a lap 10 restart Johnson made a bold move to wrestle away the top spot and from there he led throughout the remainder of the 30-lap event to claim victory.
Bobby Varin, making a rare appearance at Outlaw driving the Jordan Siri machine, stormed through the field from the ninth starting spot to pass Groover and Tyler Siri and challenge Johnson for the race lead.
With eight yellow flags to slow the pace, Varin had several cracks at Johnson, but could not quite muster up enough bite to take the lead and had to settle for second at the end.
Tyler Siri came home in third to give Siri Motorsports a sweep of the podium. Groover finished fourth, with Steve Phelps taking home fifth.
In other action Friday night, Paulie Colagiovanni bested a 14-car field in the Lanes Yamaha 360 Sprint class. Alex Payne continued his dominance in the crate sportsman division with another victory.
Ajay Potrzebowski Jr. topped the Speed Connection DIRTcar Hoosier Tire Sportsman feature, Glen Whritenour picked up the victory in the 20-lap Stan’s No Tubes Street Stock event, Kenneth Evans wired the Winners Circle Deli Mini Stock feature and Justin Eldredge topped the NAPA Hobby Stock field.
