Jankowiak Is Up To The Lancaster Task

LANCASTER, N.Y. – Andy Jankowiak held off Jimmy Zacharias and George Skora III to claim his ninth victory during the 33rd U.S. Open Weekend at NYIRP at Lancaster Speedway and Dragway on Saturday night.

For the second-generation driver, it was also his 24th career Sportsman win at Lancaster.

Jankowiak and Tony Carbone was on the front row for the Sportsman feature event, with Jankowiak showing the way over Camden Barber, Carbone, Blake Barney and Tom MacLeod racing in the top five. Todd Lorenzo slowed on the back straightaway to bring out the race’s first caution on lap three. On the restart, Jankowiak would take off over Barber, with Carbone being challenged and would be passed by Blake Barney to move into third place.

Following a Neal Dietz Jr. spin on lap eight, Jankowiak would once again take off over Barber and Barney, with Jimmy Zacharias, and Carbone racing in the top five with George Skora III running in the sixth position. Barney would battle with Barber for second off a lap 13 restart, as Skora and Mike Fiebelkorn Jr moved into fifth and sixth respectively. Zacharias would move into third place on lap 18, as Jankowiak and Barney pulled away from the field.

The leaders would hit lap traffic with 20 laps remaining. Tony Carbone would bring out the caution on lap 31, setting up a restart with Jankowiak and Barney on the front row. Jimmy Zacharias would take over second and Skora would work into third with 17 laps remaining. Timmy Lewis Jr. would work into the top ten after starting 23rd and Jake Vernon did as well after starting 20th on the grid.

Skora and Zacharias would battle for second with Barney right behind, Jankowiak would hold off Zacharias and Skora to claim the victory.  

Ryan Lagoda won his second Super Stock feature of the season. Dave Wollaber won the Jerry Gradl Motors NYPA TQ Midget feature event for his second victory of the season. It was also Wollaber’s sixth career triumph during U.S. Open Weekend, and 30th career TQ Midget win at Lancaster. Kevin Bainbridge won the 4 Cylinder feature.Â
