Weltmeyer Captures Grundy Late Model Main

MORRIS, Ill. — Points leader DJ Weltmeyer took home the victory in the 30-lap late model feature race at Grundy County Speedway on Friday night.

With rain and time restraints washing out preliminary heat races, the third-mile paved oval saw only feature races held for all divisions.

Weltmeyer, the 29-year-old third generation racer, wheeled his Team Stange/EngineMasters/DeNovi Heating & Cooling-sponsored Chevrolet No. 16 to victory, posting his second win of the season. The driver moved past Larry Schuler for the lead on lap 17 and raced to the checkered flag, holding a 0.434-second margin over Schuler at the finish.

Fastest qualifier Jim Weber finished behind the top two with last week’s feature winner grabbing fourth and Anthony Danta fifth.

“We’ve gotten a lot of top fives (this season),” said Weltmeyer.  “We’re doing things every night to get some stuff to final click together for one long run.”

Kevin Murphy raced to victory in the Midwest MASS Stock Car Series 25 lapper for sportsman drivers.

Murphy bested Marqus Hoover, David Einhaus, Clay Curts and Sean Matthuis.

Scott Gardner, last year’s division champion, captured the 25-lap street stock main event in his fourth win of the season. Gardner scored the win ahead of Randy Weese and Rick Dawson.

Gardner’s son, Scotty, looked to be on his way to victory only to stall on the track with 18 laps complete. Scotty is the current points leader and the evening’s fast timer.

Zach Chanda nailed down his first feature win of the season in the four-cylinder pure stocks class.

Chanda rolled to the 20-lap win over Dan Schmeissing and last year’s champion Cameron Preisler.

Tom Schnabel was the winner of the 20-lap Midwest Mayhem Midgets headliner.

Schnabel, winning for the third time this season, bested Jordan Caskey and points leader Scott Koerner.
