Racer Of The Day: Billy Pauch

EDITOR’S NOTE: With most of the motorsports world on hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve decided to highlight some of the sport’s legends on a daily basis. We begin each story within the pages of National Speed Sport News.

With more than 700 feature victories across the various disciplines of short-track racing, New Jersey veteran Billy Pauch continues to race modifieds on a weekly basis at New Egypt Speedway in his native state.

Pauch started in dirt modifieds and eventually raced non-winged and winged sprint cars and asphalt-type modifieds.

He has victories with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Sprint Car Series, Super DIRTcar Series, USAC, CRA and URC among other sanctioning bodies.

Two of his biggest victories came in a World of Outlaws sprint car event at the New York State Fairgrounds in 1994 and in the Race of Champions modified race at Flemington (N.J.) Speedway in one of his few runs in an asphalt modified.

Pauch is the all-time winningest driver at Flemington Speedway, East Windsor (N.J.) Speedway, Penn National (Pa.) Speedway and New Egypt Speedway.

His biggest season was in 1988 when he won 42 features and three track championships.

His son, Billy Jr., is also a successful dirt-track racer.
