Pikes Peak Drops Motorcycles For 2020

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – In the wake of the death of motorcycle racer Carlin Dunne during the 2019 edition of the Pikes Peak Int’l Hill Climb, event officials have removed motorcycle classes from the 2020 event.

The decision was made following a meeting of the Pikes Peak Int’l Hill Climb Board of Directors to review the 2019 event. The decision to remove the motorcycle classes was made so race organizers can gather data and analytics to more thoroughly review the impact on the overall event in the absence of the motorcycle classes.

“Motorcycles have been a part of the PPIHC for the past 29 years, and their history on America’s Mountain dates back to the inaugural running in 1916,” said Tom Osborne, Chairman. “That said, the motorcycle program hasn’t been an annual event. They have run 41 of the 97 years we’ve been racing on Pikes Peak. It’s just time to take a hard look at every aspect of the race, including the motorcycle program, and determine whether or not the event may change.”

Dunne, who died following an accident on the final run to the finish line at the top of Pikes Peak, was the seventh competitor to die during the Pikes Peak Int’l Hill Climb.
