CONCORD, N.C. – Fresh off his first NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series victory last week at Michigan Int’l Speedway, Zane Smith will lead the field to the green flag during Friday’s event on the Daytona Int’l Speedway road course.
Smith was named the polesitter based on NASCAR’s new competition-based formula that sets the starting lineups for each event. The new formula utilizes a driver’s finishing position from the most recent race (weighted at 50%), owner points position (35%) and the fastest lap from the previous race (15%).
This is the first time NASCAR has utilized this new formula. NASCAR most recently used a random draw to set starting fields in its three national divisions following the sport’s return to competition amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rookie Christian Eckes of Kyle Busch Motorsports will start second alongside Smith. Brett Moffitt of GMS Racing and Truck Series championship leader Austin Hill of Hattori Racing Enterprises make up row two.
The remainder of the top-10 includes Tyler Ankrum, Todd Gilliland, Tanner Gray, Ben Rhodes, Derek Kraus and Raphael Lessard.
