NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Presented by Chevrolet Performance tour in 2024 will now feature a stop at Corrigan Oil Speedway in Mason, Mich.
The quarter-mile bullring just outside of Michigan’s capital offers intense racing on the unique race track with differing corners and straightaways, giving drivers a challenge all race long. The JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour will take their talents to mid-Michigan on June 9.
Coming off a season of hiatus, Corrigan Oil Speedway rejoins the list of operational tracks in Michigan for 2024. The Speedway, formerly known as Spartan Motor Speedway and Lansing Speedway, first opened the gates in 1956 and has had a deep history with national and regional touring series.
In 1958 it first hosted the USAC National Midget Car Series, then the ARCA Racing Series in 1966 and 1967, several years of MSPA Circuit of Champions racing, plus various outlaw super late model and template late model sanctions.
In 1997, Corrigan Oil hosted the first recognizable sanction for template cars as we know them today, the Michigan Independent Super Late Model Series. Well known outlaw super late model champion, Andy Bozell captured the win.
Then, in 2002, the Speedway hosted an exhibition race that would later serve as the ground work for pro late model racing in Michigan. In 2003, USPRO Cup Series races began unloading in Mason, Mich. The first race, in June of that year, saw Fred Campbell pick up the win over Bob Varney (Car Owner/Father of Brandon & Evan Varney).
In September of that same year, Mike Carter went to victory lane over Rob Buckley and Brent Hook.
Other recognizable names who have had success at Corrigan Oil Speedway include former JEGS Tour driver, Chad Finley. In 2008, he picked up the win in the SUPERPRO Series. Jason Dietsch found success in 2009 with the same series.
In open wheel action, second generation driver, Chris Hettinger picked up two wins in the Wolverine Outlaw Winged Midgets. His daughter, Katie, now a regular in the template late model ranks, has also raced at Corrigan Oil with the 2019 Victory Custom Trailers CRA Jr Late Model Series.
Katie isn’t the only modern era driver who will be familiar with the Speedway in June. Florida’s Steve Dorer, who hails from Michigan originally, is a 1994 Super Late Model Track Champion. A few years his youth, the Varney brothers also know their way around the corner of College and Cedar Streets.
Evan has s Bandolero Feature win to his credit, while Brandon was crowned the 2017 Late Model Track Champion.Â
On Sunday, June 9, the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Presented by Chevrolet Performance joins the list of touring series to make stops at the facility. Nestled in the heart of the schedule, the $5,000 payday may not be the number one thing on drivers’ minds entering the afternoon’s race.
By June, a competitive points battle is expected to be raging on, forcing drivers to decide if they want a safe points day, or if they’ll attempt to make spectacular passes in an effort to win.
