Johnny Benson Jr. To Line Up In SRX Field At Berlin

Johnny Benson Jr. will be the 12th driver in the Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) field at Berlin Raceway on Aug. 3, as the former NASCAR champion has been chosen to fill an opening left by Paul Tracy.

Tracy was suspended from the series following the July 27 event at Pulaski County Motorsports Park.

Benson — who is a native of Grand Rapids, Mich., near Berlin Raceway — will make his SRX debut on Thursday night.

However, the local talent has won races across all three national NASCAR series — including 14 Truck Series triumphs, three Xfinity Series wins and one Cup Series victory. He won the 1995 Busch Series championship, as well as the 2008 Truck Series title.

Benson was also the 1993 ASA National Tour champion.

“I’m really excited to have the opportunity to race in the SRX series. Not only to compete against some of the best drivers in the country, but to return to my home track, Berlin Raceway,” Benson said in an SRX press release.

“It’s not often you have the opportunity to invite a good friend and a multiple different series champion to drive in SRX at his hometown track,” SRX CEO Don Hawk noted in the same press release. “I believe this announcement will be warmly received by all those great race fans at Berlin Raceway.”
