World Finals Notes: Gravel Is Top Point Earner

CONCORD, N.C. — Points accumulated during the first three nights of the World of Outlaws World Finals will set the lineups for Saturday’s heat races for the World of Outlaws Nos Energy Drink Sprint Car Series at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.

Thursday night winner David Gravel accumulated the most points in the with 288 markers. 

There is a three-way tie for second among Friday winner Brent Marks, two-time All Star champion Tyler Courtney and point leader Brad Sweet at 284 points.

Rico Abreu is fifth with 280 points.

• Brad Sweet has a 46-point lead over David Gravel heading into Saturday night’s season finale and needs to only finish 22nd or better to secure his fifth straight World of Outlaws championship.

• After crashing hard on Thursday night, All Star champion Zeb Wise sat out Friday’s program.

• Devon Borden took a wild ride in turn one during the second heat race Friday. His No. 23 machine flipped high above the fence before coming to a rest. Borden climbed from the wreckage unhurt.

“Nasty wreck,” Borden wrote on social media. “Thankful for the awesome saftey crew and all my gear for keeping me safe. At the hospital now getting checked out to make sure don’t have a concussion or anything, thank you for all the messages.”

• After hitting an infield tire in turn two during his heat race, Donny Schatz ended up taking a provisional to start Friday night’s feature. He raced from 25th to finish 13th.

• With his victory on Friday night, Brent Marks became the 12th driver to win multiple features at The Dirt Track at Charlotte. It was the 65th World of Outlaws main event at the four-tenths-mile track.

• Both 25-lap sprint car features at The Dirt Track this week have run green to checkered without a yellow flag. As well, all 28 starters were still running at the end of Friday night’s main event.

• Austin McCarl bounced back from a flip on Thursday night and raced a back-up car into Friday night’s dash. He finished 17th in the feature.
