Biggest Terre Haute Silver Crown Field Expected Sunday

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The largest car count for the Sumar Classic in a quarter century is expected to compete in the May 1 Sumar Classic USAC Silver Crown season opener at the Terre Haute Action Track.

Thirty-six entries are on the list, the most since 36 also appeared at the 1997 edition of the event.

This year’s race encompasses many of the most accomplished racers in the history of USAC racing. Five past Sumar Classic winners are in the field, including Brian Tyler (2004), Kody Swanson (2014), Shane Cockrum (2015), C.J. Leary (2016) and Justin Grant (2018).

The lineup consists of three past USAC Silver Crown champions, including six-time champ Swanson (2014-15, 2017-2019, 2021), Grant (2020) and Jerry Coons Jr. (2008).

Eight USAC National champions in total make up the field, with those three along with 1996-97 USAC National Sprint Car king Tyler, plus 2014-16, 2020-21 Sprint champ Brady Bacon, and 2019 Sprint champion C.J. Leary.

USAC National Midget champs Coons, along with Logan Seavey (2018) and first-time Silver Crown racer Buddy Kofoid (2021), are in the lineup.

Past USAC Silver Crown race winners David Byrne, Shane Cottle, and Eric Gordon, are seeking Sumar Classic win number one.

The Sumar Classic remains one of the most hotly-contested and unpredictable events of the season with no repeat winners over the past 14 runnings since 1999.
