Scelzi Sweeps Keith Bryan Memorial At Cocopah

YUMA, Ariz. – Before this weekend Dominic Scelzi had never won in the state of Arizona, and now he’s a two-time winner courtesy of sweeping the Keith Bryan Memorial with the ASCS Southwest Sprint Cars at Cocopah Speedway.

A night after earning $3,000 by claiming Friday’s opener, Scelzi drove to victory lane again in the finale to pocket another $5,000 totaling a healthy $8,000 trip to Arizona for the Fresno, Calif., driver.

The Scelzi Motorsports pilot is also now the owner of 60 career sprint car victories.

Wes Wofford and Logan Calderwood paced the field to green from the front row, and Wofford pulled ahead to lead lap one.

The battle behind Wofford quickly became intense as fourth-starting Colton Hardy powered by Calderwood on the second lap. Two circuits later Scelzi followed suit to jump into third. Meanwhile, 12th-starting Austin McCarl charged into the top-five just five laps into the feature.

Shortly after taking third Scelzi made his first bid at the lead in spectacular fashion. As Wofford and Hardy navigate traffic ahead of him, Scelzi caught the grip out of turn four perfectly and roared by Hardy on the front straightaway then slid Wofford in turns one and two.

Wofford refused to go down without a fight, crossing Scelzi over and taking the lead back as the two entered turn three. Before Scelzi could attempt to regain the top spot a yellow flew for a car slowing in turn two.

On the restart Scelzi made what would prove to be the winning move as he and Wofford traded sliders before Scelzi secured the spot as Wofford couldn’t get back by.

Scelzi built a commanding advantage in traffic, slicing through slower cars and leaving those chasing home over a straightaway behind.

McCarl climbed into second place with eight laps to go just as a yellow came out for Logan Forler doing a 360 and continuing on in turn two.

The yellow put McCarl and Ryan Timms, who had climbed from 16th to third, on Scelzi’s tail.

On the restart Scelzi pulled slightly ahead, but McCarl didn’t let him get away. As the race dipped inside five laps to go Timms threw a tight slider at McCarl for second, and the two nearly made contact. Timms ultimately claimed the runner-up spot.

Scelzi drove away in the final circuits to complete the sweep with Timms and McCarl completing the podium.

Rounding out the top-five was Sammy Swindell and Wofford.
