ALGER, Wash. — A man who is no stranger to Skagit Speedway, calls California home and has won at Dirt Cup before is next on the driver to highlight before the 51st Annual Jim Raper Memorial Super Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway, Dominic Scelzi.
Scelzi is the wheel man behind the Scelzi Enterprises No. 41 that heads to Skagit in the heat of a points battle with fellow California teenager, Corey Day.
The defending NARC King of the West Series champion sits in second place, 29 points behind Day. Through 11 races Scelzi has found victory lane three times which is two behind Day who has five wins on the year. Petaluma Speedway was the most recent NARC King of the West win for Fresno California native in May.
“It’s been a good season,” Scelzi said. “I think we’ve had more speed than what our results even show, and we’ve had great results. We were really fast the start of the year, just seemed liked it took us a little longer than what we had expected to find victory lane but with the NARC Series and outside of the NARC Series I feel competitive to win night in and night out.
“I think night in and night out we’ve been in my opinion the best car racing just been a little more quieter than others.”
Scelzi has one Dirt Cup win to his name going back to 2021 where he beat out Washington native Trey Starks for the win. Last year he podiumed again, this time finishing third behind winner Tyler Courtney and Kerry Madsen.
“We won the 2021 Dirt Cup which is really cool and then last year we were really strong, and I felt like we had a good chance to win it, [but] just sort of faded a little bit late and the 57 car [Tyler Courtney] got a little bit better and we ended up falling to third, so I’ve got high expectations for Dirt Cup as well,” Scelzi said.
“That’s a race I’d love nothing more than to add a second Dirt Cup Championship to my resume and our resume as a team. I’ve got no nerves going in, I feel pretty confident.”
