Macedo Nabs Round Four Of Southern Sprints At Avalon

LARA, Australia — World of Outlaws regular Carson Macedo claimed the fourth round of the Clay-per-view Southern Sprint Car Series with a dominant drive at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway on Saturday night.

Driving for Dyson Motorsports, Macedo led the way in the 35-lap feature to receive the winner’s $10,000 payout.

The other podium spots were filled by Brock Hallett and Aaron Reutzel.

Series leader, Jock Goodyer had to be content with fourth after starting from ninth on the grid. Jamie Veal filled the fifth position.

The victory was a major turnaround for Macedo, who failed to make the final at Mt. Gambier. The changes to the Empire Machinery car produced a remarkable result at Avalon.

Although the American claimed the pole, he was outgunned by Marcus Dumesny, who led the first 18 laps. But a clash with the lapped car of Bobby Daly ended the Australian veteran’s race.

James McFadden also had another frustrating night after contact with Reutzel forced him to the infield.

Macedo was one of a group of U.S. drivers, including Chase Randall and Justin Peck, to make the trek from Mt. Gambier to Geelong for the fourth round. While he was joined by Reutzel, some teams preferred to miss the round and stop at Warrnambool for the final race night.

The Avalon track once again proved to be a a mixed bag for the 53 competitors, with the dashes abandoned, despite much grading. The surface tended to produce single-lane racing until it opened up in the final half of the feature.

The win was a confidence booster for the 28-year-old Californian heading into the height of the Aussie summer, culminating in the Grand Annual Sprint Car Classic at Premier Speedway at the end of January.

Macedo indicated that the team would take a few days away from racing before returning in January.

Macedo is looking for victory in Australia’s greatest race, having been the runner-up in 2018.

Going into the final round of the series, Goodyer leads with 940 points from Hallett with 780, Lachlan McHugh with 730 and Aaron Reutzel with 720.
