HANFORD,Calif. — Shane Golobic won the Sprint Car Challenge Tour portion of the Peter Murphy Classic at Keller Auto Speedway on Saturday night.
The Fremont, Calif., driver swept the SCCT 360 portion of the weekend having won the night before at Thunderbowl Raceway.
Justin Sanders had to settle for the runner-up spot after battling Golobic for the last half of the race. D.J. Netto made a late race charge, using the high line around his home track but only made it up to third after starting from the fifth row.
Dominic Scelzi, the previous year’s winner and Chase Johnson rounded out the top five.
Sanders started from the pole position by virtue of winning the Pole Shuffle and quickly jumped to the lead over Joey Ancona. Colby Copeland moved into the second spot after starting from the outside of the second row but it was Corey Day who was putting on a charge.
The race would go six laps before a Michael Pombo spin in the third turn would
slow the event. The double file restart was immediately negated by a Kyle Hirst spin in the first turn. After a restart, the race would go two more laps before Grant Duinkerken stopped in the first turn and become the second car out of the race. B-Main transfer J.J. Ringo made only a few laps before pulling off the track and finished dead last.
The restart saw a Sanders-Day duel but it would be Golobic who would pass both cars at once with a low move in the third turn on lap 11. Golobic would quickly pull away to leave Sanders and Day to continue their battle but this time it was for the second spot.
Lap 20 of the 30-lap affair saw Day go over the first turn cushion allowing Sanders to take complete control of the second spot. Netto was slowly advancing to the front.
Jared Faria spun as he was exiting the second turn to bring out a caution which negated Golobic’s comfortable lead over Sanders, Day, Johnson, Netto , Copeland and Scelzi.
A single file restart saw the third place running Day have a mechanical issue and pulls off the track into the infield. A second Faria spin resulted in a red flag condition as his car blocked the first turn entrance. On the restart Netto took to the high side of the track and moved into the third spot. With three laps to go, Scelzi passed Johnson who was dealing with a power steering issue.
No one had anything for Golobic who picked up his second SCCT win in as many days.
