Carr & Mahaffey Get NOW 600 Wins

OKLAHOMA CITY — Saturday was a night of rebounds with the Dirt2Media National Open Wheel 600 Series presented by Hi-Plains Building Division at I-44 Riverside Speedway.

Matt Carr captured his first career A-Class victory after suffering mechanical issues on Friday. Likewise for Shawn Mahaffey, who slipped from first to third in Non-Wing, the Tulsa racer topped wingless ranks on Saturday. Inching closer to the record, Jett Nunley made it 20 wins in Restricted.

Leading start to finish in A-Class, traffic became an issue for the No. 93 in the closing stages. Chased by Brecken Reese until Lap 21, the runner-up spot was taken by Frank Flud. Stalking into the white flag lap, Flud would come up .330 seconds shy. Brecken Reese held third, with Brant Woods and Jett Nunley fifth.

A one-man-band on the No. 11, fuel issues were rectified and showed with a dominant performance in Stock Non-wing. Crossing 2.065 seconds to the good, the first driver chasing was Johnny Boland, followed by Brecken Reese for this second podium run of the night. Friday’s winner, Laydon Pearson, crossed fourth with Matt Carr fifth.

Matching Ryder Laplante for second all-time in Restricted, Jett Nunley raced by Kyle Hooper for the point on lap 13. Green, white, checkered for the win, Nunley was untouchable. Hooper held second over Chase McDougal. Fourth went to Cale Lagroon, while Braxton Weger made up the top five.

Saturday’s show at I-44 Riverside Speedway saw a field of 90 entries.
