Rico Abreu has an easy answer when asked where he wants to race in 2024.
Everywhere.
The No. 24 sprint car driver is tentatively planning to run a true outlaw schedule next season, as he’s done in years past, and compete in both World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series and High Limit Racing events.
He shared his 2024 intent on David Gravel’s YouTube channel, during Thursday’s episode of The Gravel Show.
“It’s really positive what’s going on in the sport right now,” Abreu said. “It’s important to see these schedules and understand the direction of what series is going where and what race tracks.”
The 31-year-old got a taste of points racing during this year’s High Limit season — as he was Kyle Larson’s chief rival for the mid-week series title and finished runner-up in the standings — but ultimately, Abreu seems to be set on taking it one big-money event at a time.
“I’ve always had this true outlaw schedule to go race where the money is at. I think that’s what’s important to me,” Abreu said. “I’ve never sat down and focused on a series or championship.”
The California native explained that he sees himself running High Limit, World of Outlaws, local Knoxville Raceway features and whatever else may make sense for his schedule.
“I’m very intrigued by the West Coast swing by both series, I’m very intrigued by what Todd Quiring is doing for the sport and Huset’s (Speedway) and the Knoxville Nationals and the Kings Royal. Those are No. 1’s to me,” Abreu said.
He did mention that the opportunity to sell merchandise does play a factor in his decision, as the World of Outlaws only allows full-time drivers to park souvenir trailers at the race track. Non-outlaw drivers are limited to selling merchandise from their haulers in the pit area.
“It’s important for me to sell merchandise at races. It’s important for me to be at events that are growing in the sport and injecting money into the sport,” Abreu noted.
But rather than pick sides, Abreu had a simple answer for what will primarily dictate his 2024 schedule.
“I enjoy supporting people that support the sport,” Abreu said.
Abreu plans to release his final decision next week.
