Rainy Start To SCCA Runoffs

ALTON, Va. — The 59th annual SCCA Runoffs kicked off Friday afternoon in the midst of rain showers at Virginia Int’l Raceway.

The Formula 5000 division kicked off the event with Sven de Vries taking the victory over an 11-car field.

Next on the track was the T1 class with Andrew Acquilante charging to his 12th Runoffs triumph aboard his familiar No. 33 Ford Mustang.

Another pole starter, Jonathan Kotyk raced his Honda-powered Mygale to victory in the Formula Ford main event, earning his fourth national championship.

Starting fifth in the GT1 field, Thomas Herb wheeled a Mercedes Benz AMG GT3 to victory, claiming the class title for the second consecutive year.

Defending National Champion Jesse Prather of Topeka, Kansas drove his No. 34 JPM/Sunoco/Carbotech/Hoosier/Amsoil BMW Z3 to his sixth overall National Championship — and his third in a row for E Production.

Franklin Futrelle started on the pole and won the Spec Racer Ford 3 division title.

Jason Ott also started on the pole and splashed through a torrential downpour to take the victory in the T3 class, driving a BMW Z4 M.

Rain pushed the Formula X race to Saturday’s full card of racing.
