The Great Australian Race

BATHURST, Australia — The 60th running of the Great Australian Race, the Bathurst 1000, takes place this weekend at the Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst, New South Wales.

The race began at Victoria’s Phillip Island Circuit and was run there from 1960 through 1962 when it moved Bathurst where it has been run since. Originally known as the Armstrong 500, after the shock maker, the race was extended from 500 miles to 1,000 kilometers in 1973.

Run under many different classifications and sanctions through the years, the Bathurst 1000 has been the signature event for the Supercars Championship since 2016.

• Shane van Gisbergen and Garth Tander drove a Holden to victory in last year’s race and Holden holds the all-time record with 36 Bathurst victories. This marks the first year that Holden, a General Motors brand, will not compete at Bathurst as the Holden is no longer available in Aussie showrooms.

• It may be an Australian race, but the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro will be key combatants at Bathurst this weekend.

• Sunday’s race is scheduled for 161 laps of the 6.313-kilometer Mount Panorama Circuit.

• While the majority of the Supercars Championship season sees drivers run solo, the Bathurst 1000 requires a co-driver for each car.

• The top four drivers in the Supercars Championship are separated by less than 300 points entering Bathhurst, with Brodie Kostecki 155 points ahead of van Gisbergen. Broc Feeney and Will Brown complete the top four. Kostecki leads the series with six victories this season.

• A pair of Supercars legends will be back in the seat at Bathurst with seven-time series champion and five-time Great Race victory Jamie Whincup co-driving with Feeney, while seven-time Bathurst 1000 winner Craig Lowndes will share a Camaro with full time Triple Eight driver Zane Goddard.

• One team with ties to the United States is Walkinshaw Andretti United, which fields cars driven by two-time Bathurst winner Chaz Mostert, who is sixth in Supercars points and Nick Percat.

• The Bathurst 1000 and qualifying for the prestigious event can be seen on SPEED SPORT 1. Viewers can catch all the action at SPEEDSPORT1.com or by downloading the new SPEED SPORT 1 App, which is now available on the most popular app platforms — Apple TV, Apple iOS, Android and Amazon Fire.
