Nürburg, Germany — The Eifel weather is once again showing all its facets at the ADAC Ravenol 24h Nürburgring. The light rainfall of the past few hours and slightly rising temperatures are currently causing clouds of fog to form, which are becoming increasingly dense. Race control therefore decided to red flag the race at around 23:15 (local time). The leading Audi R8 LMS GT3 evo II #16 of Scherer Sport PHX was the first to be waved off after 46 laps. For all participants and the organisers, it is now time to lick their wounds and wait and see. This is because no parc fermé rules apply during the forced break, so the teams can change tires, refuel and repair damaged vehicles.
The restart is scheduled for 7:00 am (local) 1:00 am ET, Sunday morning, at the earliest. UPDATE: Due to persistent fog conditions, event organizers have pushed the start back and will make another decision at 8:00am ET.
The cancellation was inevitably due to the gradually deteriorating visibility conditions around the Nordschleife.
“For safety reasons, we have to interrupt the race if visibility is too limited. Above all, the marshals around the Nordschleife and the Grand Prix circuit must be able to see the neighboring marshals in order to see the flag and light signals and be able to give their own signals accordingly,” explains Race Director Walter Hornung.
“Over the past few hours, we have discussed the situation with several meteorologists, who have come to the same conclusion: Visibility will not improve until tomorrow morning.” Race control will then regularly check the visibility conditions by means of inspection laps and announce the restart with an appropriate lead time.
