SURFERS PARADISE, Australia — Cam Waters crushed the field to win the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 at Surfers Paradise on Saturday. However, two hours after the race he was penalized for a pitlane infraction.
Waters led a Tickford Racing one-two finish, taking the checkered flag 9.4 seconds ahead of teammate Thomas Randle.
Motorsport Australia later confirmed protests were received from Grove Racing over alleged pit lane operational breaches over Waters, Randle and Will Davison’s cars.
A hearing was later held after the race and has now concluded, with stewards handing down fines and points penalties to both Ford teams. The race result remains unchanged.
Saturday’s 85-lapper marked just the ninth instance of a Safety Car-free race in 45 championship races, and the first race in Gold Coast history to have a 100 percent finishing rate.
“What a day and what weekend so far,” said Waters immediately following his fourth win of the season.
“This thing has been an absolute rocket ship all weekend, and even Tommy’s car as well, so massive credit to all the boys and girls at Tickford for giving us some jets. It’s so awesome to convert that into a race win.”
Broc Feeney finished third after a late pass of Matt Payne, while Brodie Kostecki came home fifth.
