Prior to being paralyzed in an accident at Florida’s Walt Disney World Speedway prior to the 2000 IndyCar Series season, team owner Sam Schmidt made three starts in the Indianapolis 500 between 1997 to ’99. He failed to finish all three, managing a best finish of 26th in 1998.
