Glory Days: Gaines Hangs On At Winchester

Dickie Gaines (pictured) ran down leaders Darl Harrison and Benny Rapp during the closing laps to win the 50-lap ASA sprint car main event at Winchester Speedway on Aug. 2, 1970.

Harrison and Rapp battled for the top spot throughout, but with the track getting slicker by the lap, Gaines hung it out a little farther and claimed the lead on lap 44.

He led the rest of the way, beating Harrison to the checkered flag by less than a car length. Rapp finished third.
