What To Watch For — May 12-14

The month of May gets underway at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with the GMR Grand Prix on the road course, while NASCAR holds its annual Throwback Weekend and the World of Outlaws take on the Pennsylvania Posse.

Month Of May

The month of May at Indianapolis Motor Speedway kicks off with this weekend’s GMR Grand Prix on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course.

The fifth event of the NTT IndyCar Series campaign will run Saturday afternoon with practice and qualifying for the 85-lap (207.32 miles) race on Friday.

Indy NXT the Cooper Tires USF2000 and USF Pro 2000 series are also on the card.

Throwback Weekend

Darlington (S.C.) Raceway is among the oldest race tracks on the NASCAR schedule and it’s the fitting home of NASCAR’s annual Throwback Weekend that recognizes the sport’s glorious past.

With the majority of teams and drivers utilizing “throwback” paint schemes that honor historical drivers and machines of the past, all three NASCAR national series will be in action at the 1.366-mile egg-shaped track. The Craftsman Truck Series races on Friday, the Xfinity Series hits the track on Saturday and the Cup Series runs on Mother’s Day.

Pennsylvania Invasion

The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series makes its second visit of the season to the Keystone state.

Things kicked off Wednesday at Lincoln Speedway, where Rico Abreu won earlier this year, with action moving to Williams Grove Speedway for Friday and Saturday events. The series’ March stop at the Grove was rained out.

Zeb Wise, Lance Dewease, Brent Marks and Chase Dietz have won weekly sprint car features at Williams Grove this season.

Illinois Speedweek

Four races will make up Illinois Speedweek for dirt late model competitors.

The first two events were to be run under the Castrol Night in America banner Wednesday at Spoon River Speedway and Thursday at Lincoln Speedway.

The short-track action continues Friday and Saturday with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series taking over the sanctioning duties for events at Farmer City Raceway and Fairbury Speedway.

The first two nights of the series pay $23,023 to win, while Friday’s Farmer City event offers up $25,000 to the winner and $30,000 will go to the top dog on Saturday night.

All Stars

The All Star Circuit of Champions sprint cars will leave their home state of Ohio for the first time since Florida Speedweeks with stops at the quarter-mile Jacksonville (Ill.) Speedway and Wisconsin’s Wilmot Raceway.

Supercross Finale

The Monster Energy AMA Supercross series concludes Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City with an unexpected champion to be crowned.

Chase Sexton inherited the point lead last weekend in Denver when Eli Tomac ruptured an Achilles tendon. With Tomac in second and third-place point man Cooper Webb both out of action for the finale, Sexton will clinch the title when Tomac does not compete in Utah.

Hitting The Road

The IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship will return to its California home track with its annual appearance at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for the fourth round of the series.

The Motul Course de Monterey will feature the sanctioning body’s new hybrid GTP prototypes as the main attraction, while the LMP 2, GTD Pro and GTD classes will also be in competition.

Also on the card during the weekend will be the Michelin Pilot Challenge, Mazda MX-5 Cup and Lamborghini Super Trofeo series.
