What 2 Watch For — Oct. 6-8

Big short-track events headline the racing card this weekend, as Super DIRT Week, the World of Outlaws at Port Royal Speedway, the World Series of Speedway Racing and Oktoberfest are among the signature events being contested.

Super DIRT Week

The 51st edition of Super DIRT Week takes place this week at the famed Oswego (N.Y.) Speedway.

Nearly 300 cars across for divisions have pre-entered the event at the five-eighths-mile track, which has been covered with clay for the five days of competition that begin Wednesday afternoon.

Seventy-nine cars are entered in the headlining big-block modified division, while there are 80 358 modified machines scheduled to compete. Sportsman and pro stocks will round out the slate of events, which wraps up with Sunday’s prestigious Billy Whittaker Cars 200 for the big-block modifieds, which offers $50,000 to the winner.

Sprint Cars In Pennsylvania

After a Tuesday night High Limits Racing Series event at New Jersey’s Bridgeport Speedway, the best winged sprint car racers in the country were set for three big nights of racing at Pennsylvania’s Port Royal Speedway.

The prestigious Tuscarora 50, which was rained out in early September, will be made up on Thursday night with $60,000 on the line to the winner.

The weekend wraps up with two nights of World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series competition at the state-of-the-art half-mile race track.

WoO LMS Double

Bobby Pierce pretty much has the World of Outlaws CASE Construction Late Model Series title on ice with 12 victories in the series this season, but the campaign continues with a pair of Midwest venues on the docket this weekend.

On Friday, the series returns to Iowa for an event at 34 Raceway, while an Autumn stop at Fairbury (Ill.) Speedway is on the docket Saturday night.

Charlotte ROVAL

The annual fall NASCAR trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway sees the NASCAR Cup Series and Xfinity Series drivers compete on the ROVAL, the course that is part oval and part road course at the Concord, N.C., facility. 

Sunday afternoon’s Cup Series event is the sixth race in the NASCAR Playoffs and will complete the field for the Round of 8, which will contest the title over the final four races of the season. William Byron and Ryan Blaney have already clinches spots in the Round of 8.

Toyota GR Cup

The Toyota GR Cup Series racks up its inaugural campaign with a three-race weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend. Single races will be run on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the spec series featuring Toyota GR86 machines. Tyler Gonzalez holds a commanding lead in the standings entering the final weekend of competition.

The series shares the weekend with the Indy 8 Hour for the Fanatec GT World Challenge America.

Oktoberfest

Five days of racing headline the 54th running of Oktoberfest at Wisconsin’s LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway.

Practice begins on Wednesday with multiple classes taking part over the action-packed week of competition.

Feature races begin on Friday evening and continue through the weekend with the ASA Midwest Tour headliner Oktoberfest 200 putting a lid on the festivities on Sunday afternoon.

The Dick Trickle 99 for super late models headlines Friday’s program with the Big 8 Late Model Series topping Saturday’s card.

World Series

The annual World Series of Speedway Racing invades Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park for three days of action on the five-eighths-mile asphalt oval.

CARS Tour

Local divisions headline the Friday program, with the PASS super late models on top of Saturday’s eight-division program that includes qualifying for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, which is the signature event on the final day of competition, which also includes Sunoco Modifieds and NEMA midgets among other classes.

Lawrenceburg Loot

The USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car Championship visits Indiana’s Lawrenceburg Speedway Saturday for the annual Fall Nationals, with $20,000 on the line to the winner of the event on the three-eighths-mile dirt track.
