SVG’s Door To NASCAR Opens With Release From Supercars

Shane van Gisbergen’s plan to race NASCAR in 2024 is taking shape following his top-10 finish at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course on Sunday — his second career start in the Cup Series.

A new development came Wednesday, as it was announced that the three-time Supercars champion will be replaced by Will Brown at Red Bull Ampol Racing (referred to as Triple Eight) next season.

Brown was granted an early release from his team, Erebus Motorsport, in order to sign a three-year deal with Triple Eight Engineering.

“This announcement comes as the team has agreed to allow Shane ‘SVG’ van Gisbergen to explore his dreams to race in overseas categories in 2024 and beyond,” Triple Eight explained in a recent statement.

Van Gisbergen made his first Cup Series start in the PROJECT91 Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing during the Chicago Street Race on July 2. He became the first driver in 60 years to win his NASCAR debut.

Trackhouse Racing brought the New Zealander back for the Verizon 200 At The Brickyard on Aug. 13, where van Giserbgen finished 10th on the 2.439-mile road course.

The 34-year-old, who has won 79 races in his illustrious Supercars career, will finish the Supercars season with Triple Eight. He is currently third in the standings, 54 points behind leader Brodie Kostecki.

It is yet to be confirmed what Cup Series team van Gisbergen will race for in 2024, though Trackhouse Racing owner Justin Marks has made it clear he intends to keep van Gisbergen under his roof.

“We’re working hard right now on putting a deal together for him,” Marks said, according to a Supercars press release. “It’s my plan, he’ll race for Trackhouse next year alongside some of our partners in the Chevy family. He’s just really, really good.”
