Lake Speed

From Jackson, Miss., Lake Speed was a constant on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series circuit for nearly 20 years. Yet he only found victory lane once — at Darlington Raceway in 1988 during the TranSouth 500.

Driving an Oldsmobile fielded by his own small team and riding on Hoosier tires, Speed was the class of the field on March 27, 1988. Leading a race-high 178 laps, Speed beat a field of drivers that included Hall of Famers like Alan Kulwicki, Davey Allison, Bill Elliott, Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty and Bobby Allison.
