CONCORD, N.C. — NASCAR announced Wednesday that Hendrick Motorsports spotter Eddie D’Hondt has been indefinitely suspended after news broke of his recent arrest in Catawba County.
According to Hickory (N.C.) Police Department records, D’Hondt — the spotter for Chase Elliott’s No. 9 Chevrolet team — was arrested May 12.
Public records from Catawba District Court show two misdemeanor cases involving D’Hondt on the books. One is set for June 7, relating to N.C. Statute 14-23.6(A) (battery of an unborn child) and the second is scheduled for June 30 relating to Statute 14-33(C)(2) (assault on a female).
D’Hondt’s indefinite suspension falls under violations of Sections 12.8.1.e (Member Conduct Guidelines) and 2.11 (Required Notice) in the NASCAR Rule Book.
Hendrick Motorsports also suspended D’Hondt Wednesday and issued a statement regarding the matter.
“We became aware of the situation this morning and have immediately and indefinitely suspended Mr. D’Hondt’s role with our company,” the statement read. “We are taking this matter very seriously and will continue to seek additional information about the alleged incident.”
D’Hondt has spotted for Elliott since the Dawsonville, Ga., driver’s rookie Cup Series season in 2016. He also works with JR Motorsports’ No. 7 team and driver Justin Allgaier in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and Hattori Racing Enterprises’ No. 16 team and driver Austin Hill in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
Prior to working with Elliott, D’Hondt spotted for Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch at the Cup Series level.
An interim spotter for Elliott this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway has yet to be named.
