Ankrum Earns COTA Truck Pole In The Rain

AUSTIN, Texas – On a soggy morning at Circuit of the Americas, Tyler Ankrum earned his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series pole for the tour’s first visit to the popular 3.410-mile road course.

Ankrum was able to put his GMS Racing Chevrolet on the pole for the Toyota Tundra 225 thanks to a lap of 2:43.591 in the second round of qualifying amid a persistent rain shower that is expected to continue throughout the day Saturday.

RESULTS: Toyota Tundra 225 Qualifying

Kaz Grala, making his second Truck Series start of the season for Young’s Motorsports, qualified second with a lap of 2:43.720. Defending NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Sheldon Creed qualified third, followed closely by Matt Crafton and Todd Gilliland.

John Hunter Nemechek qualified sixth ahead of road course specialists Cameron Lawrence and Parker Chase. Austin Hill and Christian Eckes completed the top-10 in qualifying.

Paul Menard, making his return to NASCAR after retiring from full-time competition at the end of the 2019 season, qualified 26th.

Forty-three teams attempted to qualify for the 36-truck field. Jennifer Jo Cobb, Spencer Boyd, Dawson Cram, Logan Bearden, John Atwell, Sam Lecomte and Brad Gross failed to qualify for Saturday’s race.

The Toyota Tundra 225 is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on FS1.
