CONCORD, N.C. — It’s difficult to believe that July is upon us and fireworks will soon light up the night sky as the nation celebrates Independence Day.
So too, we’ve passed the midpoint in the racing season. Championship battles are heating up and it’s only a few weeks before school resumes in many parts of the country.
With all of that in mind, here are a few questions and answers based on the first half of 2024:
Who’s the best winged sprint car driver in the land?
That’s not an easy question to answer, especially this year, but one thing is certain – fans will be well entertained as the month of money carries the touring sprint car professionals through the Kings Royal and the Knoxville Nationals.
David Gravel, Brad Sweet and Tyler Courtney have dominated the headlines, but the best driver so far might just be Corey Day.
The 18-year-old protégé of World of Outlaws champion Jason Meyers has won seven races, including features with High Limit Racing – where he runs full time – and the World of Outlaws. The California native also banked $62,000 for winning the Dirt Cup at Washington’s Skagit Speedway.
Gravel, Courtney and Pennsylvania travelers Anthony Macri and Danny Dietrich have all pulled down nine victories through July 1.
Sweet, Day and Sheldon Haudenschild have each won seven races. Sweet has been his always-consistent self, while Haudenschild has been extremely inconsistent.
As we head into the big-money races, any conversation about the best sprint car racer must include Kyle Larson and Donny Schatz. They both seem to get hot at the right time.
