Kevin Harvick continued his dazzling rookie NASCAR Winston Cup Series season, winning the inaugural Tropicana 400 at Chicagoland Speedway.
The 25-year-old Harvick drove the GM Goodwrench Chevrolet owned by Richard Childress and formerly wheeled by the late Dale Earnhardt. It was his second victory this season.
Robert Pressley finished second, a career best. Pressley’s previous best finish was a third at Texas Motor Speedway in 1998.
Ricky Rudd, Dale Jarrett and Jimmy Spencer finished third through fifth, followed by Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Sterling Marlin and Bill Elliott.
Harvick took a reverse victory lap, three fingers on his left hand extended out the window, honoring Earnhardt, then put on a dazzling display of tire smoke before a wildly cheering sell-out crowd in excess of 75,000.
