Michael Andretti’s seven victories in 16 Molson Indy Toronto races is a record that will likely be unmatched in racing.
Actually, the second-generation American star’s Toronto record is 7-for-15, because he missed the 1993 race during his brief sojourn with the McLaren Formula One team. And if Andretti’s victory the 95-lapper at Toronto’s Exhibition Place street circuit was the most unlikely of his Toronto career, it was probably the most satisfying of any of the CART-record 41 Champ Car race wins he has claimed since 1986.
Andretti extended his record total of CART triumphs to 41 by coming from last to first in front of a race-record 73,628 fans, beating Alex Tagliani by 2.74 seconds, with 1996 Toronto winner Adrian Fernandez third in a race that featured 11 caution periods.
