Kyle Larson began the month of May by winning the closest race in NASCAR Cup Series history, defeating Chris Buescher by 0.001 seconds at Kansas Speedway.
Can he end the month of May with a victory in the 108th Indianapolis 500 before heading to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600 in what is being billed as the “Hendrick 1100” on May 26?
That’s a mighty task for any race car driver, especially for one making his first Indy car start in the biggest race of the year at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Larson, however, is up for the challenge.
The 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion will drive the No. 17 HendrickCars.com Dallara/Chevrolet in the Indy 500 for Arrow McLaren/Hendrick Motorsports. After the Indy 500 concludes, he will travel to North Carolina’s Charlotte Motor Speedway and climb into the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to complete his marathon day of racing.
From 2013 to 2020, Larson ran the NASCAR Cup Series for Chip Ganassi Racing, which also fields a successful IndyCar team.
Larson, however, didn’t believe it was the right time to try the Indy 500.
