INDIANAPOLIS – Team Penske’s Will Power spun out leaving pit lane and drifted into Colton Herta’s path in Turn 1 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Herta was able to avoid Power’s Chevrolet, but his Honda spun out in the short chute at 5:32 p.m. Eastern Time in Wednesday’s Indy 500 Open Test.
Herta’s Honda sustained rear damage and was brought back to Gasoline Alley on the back of a flatbed truck.
Chip Ganassi Racing driver Marcus Ericsson, who a few minutes earlier avoided Helio Castroneves’ crash, barely missed Herta’s sliding Honda.
The combination of cold and windy temperatures combined with a penetrant used to help track drying, have made the track conditions difficult late in Wednesday test session at the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
IndyCar Race Director Kyle Novak and Jason Penix went onto the pit entry lane to survey the surface and determine what is causing the incidents at such low speeds.
Series officials have closed the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to further examine the track surface causing the issues.
This is the first day of a two-day test session for the May 29, 106th Indianapolis 500.
