LONG BEACH, Calif. — Defending Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach winner Josef Newgarden of Team Penske was the fastest driver in Sunday morning’s warmup session for the 48th running of North America’s biggest street race.

The two-time NTT IndyCar Series champion drove his No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet around the tight 1.968-mile, 11-turn temporary street course on the streets of St. Petersburg in 1:06.5611. Two-time Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach winner Alexander Rossi of Andretti Autosport was second at 1:06.7540 in the No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet.
Hometown hero Colton Herta of Andretti Autosport was third in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda at 1:08.8118 followed by 2015 Long Beach winner Scott Dixon at 1:07.0286 in the No. 9 PNC Bank Honda. Pole winner Kyle Kirkwood of Andretti Autosport rounded out the top five at 1:07.0482 in the No. 27 AutoNation Honda.
Several drivers had minor spins on the cold track, but there were no contact issues.
