Herta Continues Fast St. Petersburg Pace In Warmup

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Colton Herta, the 2021 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg winner, was the fastest driver in Sunday morning’s NTT IndyCar Series warmup session.

The Andretti Global driver had a best lap around the 14-turn, 1.8-mile temporary street course at 59.9267 seconds in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda. That was a bit faster than six-time NTT IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon’s time at 59.9734 seconds in the No. 9 PNC Bank Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing.

Two-time and defending IndyCar Series champion Alex Palou was third in the No. 10 DHL Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing with a best time of 1:00.0292.

Team Penske’s duo of 2022 St. Pete winner Scott McLaughlin and two-time St. Petersburg winner Josef Newgarden followed to round out the top five. McLaughlin was fourth in the No. 3 Chevrolet at 1:00.1673 and Newgarden was fifth at 1:00.2893 in the No. 2 PPG Chevrolet.

Newgarden starts on the pole when the race begins at 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time. The NBC broadcast begins at 12 noon Eastern Time.
