Stewart Comes Up Shy In Final Round

LAS VEGAS — Two-ten-thousandths of a second.

That’s what kept Tony Stewart from winning the Wally in the Top Alcohol class Sunday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

In his drag racing debut, Stewart qualified second and advanced to the final round where he lost to third-generation racer Madison Payne.

Stewart ran a 5.258-second pass at 271.57 mph, but lost out to Payne’s 5.262-second (275.90 mph) blast in the final round.

Payne, who is a college student and said in her television interview that she had to return to California for an exam on Monday, is the daughter of former Top Fuel driver Shelly Anderson-Payne and Top Alcohol Funny Car and Pro Modified racer Jay Payne.

Prior to Sunday’s final round, Stewart told FOX Sports, “I’m definitely having more fun than I’ve had in a long time, definitely not anywhere that has fenders on it. So I’m lovin’ this sport.”

Stewart’s Tony Stewart Racing Funny Car, wheeled by Matt Hagan, won Sunday’s Funny Car final.
