CONCORD, N.C. — Ricky Thornton Jr. has made a habit of putting a whipping on the competition this season and he did it again on the final night of the World of Outlaws World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.
Thornton romped through the field from 10th starting spot and earned the $25,000 top prize in the final World of Outlaws CASE Construction Late Model Series race of the season.
It was Thornton’s third series victory this season and his 38th overall feature victory this season.
Cade Dillard started on the pole and led the first 26 laps of the four-tenths-mile oval, while Thornton steadily worked his way toward the front.
Approaching the middle portion of the race, Thornton moved to the top of the race track.
He sped past Dillard on lap 27 and despite the only yellow flag of the race on lap 33, led the remainder of the distance.
“I got to sixth right away,” explained Thornton, who also won on Friday night. “I was on the bottom, and I thought the top looks really good and I went up there. Our car has been really fast. It’s an awesome night and an awesome week really.
“My guys bust their butts. This is a new car and I think this was the best car that we had all year.”
Mike Marlar came on strong in the closing laps to finish second after winning here on Thursday night.
“It came on at the end and made for a real exciting race,” Marlar said. “I feel like that was the first really good show we put on for the fans this weekend.”
Chris Madden finished third.
“We had a great weekend,” Madden said. “No complaints. Thanks to all my guys, they work hard.”
Garrett Smith and Dale McDowell rounded out the top five.
