Sobotka Survives For Sportsman DIRT Week Score

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Zach Sobotka inherited the lead in Sunday’s Chevrolet Performance 75 sportsman race when polesitter Chad Edwards, seemingly headed for an easy win, dropped out.

From there he was on cruise control until the waning laps, when Matt Janczuk made a run at him. Janczuk came up short and Sobotka, who started the caution riddled event in the tenth row, rode the wave to victory lane.

“This is awesome!” declared the winner before adding, in a classic bit of understatement, that, “The track was a little bit rough but we made it.”

Rough indeed. The majority of the 13 yellows were attributed to either cars spinning out, bouncing into another or having a rear suspension part or tire give out from running through the same holes that bedeviled the 358 modified field Saturday night.

Edwards could pull out to a solid lead after every restart, but seldom got to string more than a few laps together before the next yellow. He was challenged in the early stages by front row companion Andrew Buff, but his mount gave out on lap 45, with Edwards then retiring 10 laps later. Meanwhile, Sobotka had been climbing through the field and Janczuk, who started third, found the track coming to him and made a resurgence

Brian Calabrese hit the stripe third with rookie Justin Stone fourth. Alex Payne, Tanner Siemons, Ryan Godown, Mike Fowler, Michael Sabia and Remington Hamm rounded out the top-10, with 17 of the 36 starters still mobile at the end of 75 laps.

The finish:
