CHICKAMUNGA, Ga. – Veteran dirt late model racer Dale McDowell, 55, revealed Sunday afternoon that he is battling prostate cancer.
The news was announced on McDowell’s official Twitter account Sunday afternoon. In the statement, it was revealed McDowell was diagnosed earlier in the summer. Doctors believe the cancer is confined to his prostate, which he is scheduled to have removed Monday morning.
As a result, McDowell’s plans for the remainder of the season have been put on hold. He is expected to be sidelined for at least six weeks.

McDowell has enjoyed a number of memorable moments during his lengthy career, including winning the 2005 World 100 at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, as well as the 1999 Hav-A-Tampa National championship. He also has victories in the National 100 at East Alabama Motor Speedway, the USA Nationals at Wisconsin’s Cedar Lake Speedway, the Topless 100 at Batesville (Ark.) Motor Speedway and the Dixie Shootout at Georgia’s Dixie Motor Speedway.
This season the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer has earned five victories, including two with the Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals and one with the Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals. His most recent win came Saturday during the King of the Mountain event at Tennessee’s Smoky Mountain Speedway.
