Stockers Take Center Stage At Cocopah

SOMERTON, Ariz. — The Winter Nationals resumed at Cocopah Speedway on Wednesday night with a different show.

Stock cars and hobby stocks each ran a main event only for the top 24 in points from last week with four added provisionals for stock cars.  Both divisions drew for starting positions.

Additionally, the Gene Freeman pit stop contest for mods and sport mods was held between the pair of mains.

Each event was $1,000 to win.

The 30-lap hobby stock main was led by Thomas Daffern for three laps until Joe Peterson drove under Daffern out of turn four on lap four to take the lead.

Daffern came back 10 laps later with a topside drive out of turn four to retake the top spot. Daffern and Peterson raced side by side for many laps until Daffern pulled away after a restart.

Zack Tate took second with a few laps remaining and raced side by side but Daffern held off the challenge to win over Tate and Peterson.

The 30-lap stock car main was led by Rick Diaz for seven laps before Mike Albertsen used the low line to take over.

Albertson quickly pulled away from the pack and a yellow provided little problem for the Audubon, Iowa, driver.

Albertson took the checkers ahead of Diaz and Jim Horejsi.

Tyler Bannister and crew won the pit crew contest, collecting $1,000 for a 53-second round.

Thursday night the full five IMCA division show will resume with all the action available to watch live on IMCA.tv.
