CANJOHARIE, N.Y. — Legendary New York modified racer Dave Lap has died. He was 75 years old.
Lape drove his first modified race in 1964 and went onto enjoy a career that lasted more than 50 years and included 191 feature victories.
Lape won seven track championships and 99 features at Fonda (N.Y.) Speedway alone. He also picked up a pair of Utica-Rome Speedway championships and claimed the 1977 Mr. Dirt title.
Among the other tracks where Lape triumphed are Orange County Fair Speedway, Five Mile Point Speedway, the New York State Fairgrounds, Weedsport Speedway and Albany-Saratoga Speedway.
Lape has been inducted into numerous racing Halls of Fame, including the Northeast Dirt Modified Hall of Fame and the Eastern Motorsports Press Ass’n Hall of Fame.
