MILLSBORO, Del. — The Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series Fueled By Sunoco is set for its 10th consecutive season of competition.
The series kicks off its 10th anniversary year in South Carolina and Florida with the first appearance at Lake View Motor Speedway in Nichols, N.C., Feb. 2-4 and the annual Sunshine Swing’ at All-Tech Raceway in Lake City, Fla., Feb. 7-11.
Both the modifieds and Crate 602 Sportsman will take part in the STSS trek south.
Back in the Northeast, the 2023 campaign for the STSS modifieds will consist of a second Elite Series season plus traditional River Valley Builders North and Rent Equip/Party Central South Regions for the STSS big-block/small-block modifieds with Crate 602 Sportsman companion events.
The Elite Short Track Super Series program returns with a repurposed payout, offering $12,000 to win on three occasions with money spread throughout the field including $1,000 just to take the green flag. This change is expected to benefit more competitors taking part in series events. The final two events will again top the $50,000 mark in winners’ shares.
Maryland’s Hagerstown Speedway – a former staple for the modifieds – kicks it all off on Saturday, March 11 with the Mods in the Mid-Atlantic paying $12,000 to the winner and $1,000 to take the green as the opener for both the South Region and Elite program.
Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, N.Y., hosts Elite event No. 2 and the North Region opener Saturday, April 8 with $12,000 going to the winner and $1,000 to start.
Utica-Rome Speedway’s historic New Yorker on Labor Day Sunday (Sept. 3) with $12,000 going to the victor after 50 laps and $1,000 to start.
The two $50,000-plus-to-win staples of the series take place in September and October.
New York’s Fonda Speedway plays host to the $53,000-to-win Fonda 200 weekend Sept. 14-16. The 200-lap event rewards all starters with $1,000.
Port Royal (Pa.) Speedway will again be the site of the Speed Showcase weekend with a $5,000-to-win preliminary program on Thursday (Oct. 12) and a $50,000-to-win, 75-lap program on Saturday (Oct. 14) with qualifying reserved for Friday. This event will serve as the Elite series’ championship round.
The STSS North Region is anchored by traditional venues and a first-time visit to the Canadian Province of Quebec.
The April 8 Orange County date launches the North Region agenda followed by a Tuesday, May 9 visit to N.Y.’s Accord Speedway, one of the original tracks in the series’ inaugural 2014 season.
Outlaw Speedway in Dundee, N.Y., moves to a June date (June 6) with Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, Vt., returning for the second straight year at $10,000 to win on Sunday, June 18.
Fonda Speedway has its first of two dates on Sunday, July 2 paying $10,000 to the winner, with Utica-Rome Speedway on Thursday, July 20 rewarding the winner with $6,100 and $610 to start.
Quebec’s Autodrome Granby and Le RPM Speedway take the series north of the border for the first time ever on Tuesday, July 25 and Wednesday, July 26. Both events pay $10,000 to the winner for 60 laps.
September is anchored by previously mentioned visits to Utica-Rome (Sept. 3) and Fonda (Sept. 14-16) followed by the finale at Orange County Fair Speedway on Friday, Oct. 20 paying $10,000 to the winner and championship points.
The Working Man’s Race American Racer Cup Short Track SuperNationals is set for its 15th year at N.Y.’s Afton Motorsports Park as a non-points-paying race Oct. 6-7.
Hagerstown’s return to modified racing on March 11 launches three consecutive events in March, followed by Selinsgrove (Pa.) Speedway on March 18 and a first-time sanction of the ’60 Over Special’ honoring Doug Hoffman on Saturday, March 25 at Bridgeport (N.J.) Motorsports Park. The high banks of Bridgeport take on a second date this season of Sunday, July 9.
Delaware Int’l Speedway has been on the schedule since 2015 and will again host the Diamond State 50 on Tuesday, May 16.
A special elbow’s-up event on the Action Track USA one-fifth-mile oval on Tuesday, Aug. 1 features a new facility for the modifieds in a non-points event. A unique format is planned for this event by speedway promoter Doug Rose and the STSS.
New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway moves from May to an August date with a Tuesday, Aug. 8 event on the calendar.
Port Royal Speedway’s two dates both take place during Speed Showcase weekend with a $5,000-to-win event Thursday and $50,000-to-win event Saturday.
Georgetown (Del.) Speedway, with a host of improvements planned for the off-season, is set for two events including ‘Blast at the Beach’ on Tuesday, Aug. 29 and the Mid-Atlantic Championship weekend paying championship points on Oct. 27-28.
